Senate passes same-sex marriage Bill

On 29 November of  2017 the Senate has passed the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017 (“Marriage Amendment Bill”) with 43 members in favour and 12 against.

The Marriage Amendment Bill proposes to amend the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) to provide that marriage is between two people.  

The Bill will now go before the House of Representatives for a final vote.
